Walkovers History

Who would have thought that when a group of 17 year olds, A-level students and friends thought up a crazy idea one day in the playground, that Walkovers Cricket Club would still be going from strength to strength nearly 10 years later.

Back in the winter of 2000, a group of about 8 friends were sitting doing nothing in one of their free periods whilst doing A-levels (yes they were still A-levels at that time). One of them came up with a crazy idea of entering an evening league cricket team into the local league.

Within a few weeks however, things were motoring along. We had got hold of a phone number for the league organiser, and again whilst on a free period, we gave him a ring and bingo, we were in the league!

Now we just had to think of a name… well here’s how I remember how the story goes. Whilst on the phone to the league organiser, one of the group was eating a pack of Walkers Crisps, and being an extremely clever chap, this one friend came up with Walkovers (see the link from Walkers?!) cos we thought we’d be walked over every game!!

We had a few players who had played cricket for schools, and some for the Island of Jersey, but about 90% of the players had never played cricket… disaster loomed as the big day of the first game approached. Thankfully, we knew an oldie who had a lot of spare kit from the days when he used to play, which he very, very kindly gave to us. As a constant thanks to this gentleman, he has become an unofficial patron of the club, in a very unofficial way!

Rather than build up the tension at this point, I’ll simply say we lost, but we did win 2 games in the first season!!! Not a massive achievement but still we were very chuffed.

So that’s a brief history of how it all began, over the next few pages read about how we went from the league’s whipping boys, to league cup finals, overseas tours and finally promotion. The last 10 years have been amazing, and now we’ve got our finger out and done this website, we are looking forward to building a very bright future. So here’s to the next 10 years and beyond.

A big thanks to those group of friends who started it all off, John Patterson, Paul Michel, Nick Richardson, Andrew Bouchard, Neil Cowling, Liam du Feu, Joel Lucas, Mark le Roux. All of who are still playing for the club, and amazingly, still very good friends!

“And it’s Walk-o-vers, Walk-overs C.C, We’re by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen…”
