Walkovers B v Mavericks

Jersey Indoor League Division 3
Fort Regent Leisure Centre
Start Time 20.00 GMT (21.00 Local)

20.40pm Welcome to you all for the first match of Walkovers B's season here at Fort Regent in Jersey. Walkovers appear to be in early disserray here with captain Jake Patel admitting there may only be 5 players turning up. Early season farce anyone?

20.45pm "If I'm honest, all we are looking at here is bonus points - we have two tough games first up" are the words of Patel - not overly encouraging is it! Mavericks were relegated from Division 2 last time out but do possess good players.

20.50pm Daniel Cox, 'injured' from the marathon turns up meaning that Simon Pugsley 'injured' won't have to play in his jeans having turned up to watch.

20.55pm Patel calls tails - it fails. Must be something in this track, Patel would also have bowled as Mavericks captain Gilham puts Walkovers B into bat. TOSS

21.10pm Some delay here as we wait for the previous game to finish. The B look nervous, 5 out of the 6 are also padded up ready to bat - only Patel without, what does he know? Passive banter about football dream teams flying about, Paul Michel believing he will win the tournement now he has used his wild-card. Hmmm. Spencer asks Patterson to test his pads and box by swinging a bat into them.

21.20pm Previous match finishes and Walkovers warm up, or try to. Big Hansie, Matt Cox and Jake fail to muster the courage to ask for a ball from the Mavericks but luckily for them Gemma Dunning intervenes. Paul Michel states "People who wear caps indoors should be shot" - interesting views that man. Walkovers would start without Dan Cox if this view became law in Jersey. Looks like they are ready to start at last, hurragh! Matt Cox facing with Mavericks Weir opening the bowling..

0.1 Weir to M. Cox, no run. Ball on middle and off, dabbed to the offside
0.2 Weir to M. Cox, no run. Swing and a miss outside the off stump
0.3 Weir to M. Cox, 3 runs. The B team get their season underway with a dabbed cut to the back wall and they run through for 3 runs.
0.4 Weir to Vosser, no run. Vosser lets his first ball go as he shoulders arms outside off
0.5 Weir to Vosser, OUT. Decent ball on a good length beats Vosser and hits the top off off stump. Vosser was trying to work it to the offside but lacked footwork.
H.Vosser b Weir 0 (2b 0x4 0x6)

Not the start Walkovers were after there, but it was a good ball to remove him. CE Vibert in at number 3, let's hope he can stick around for a while

0.6 Weir to Vibert, 2 runs. Off the mark immediately with a dab behind point for 2.

End of Over 1 (5 runs) Walkovers: 5/1
M. Cox 3* (3b) Weir 1-0-5-1
C. Vibert 2* (1b)

Gemma Dunning is the new bowler from the same end, Vibert still on strike

1.1 Dunning to Vibert, no run. No footwork, played and missed outside off
1.2 Dunning to Vibert, no run. Ball on middle and off defended on front foot
1.3 Dunning to Vibert, no run. Ball pitches outside leg, Vibert moves across to play it fine but the ball hits the thigh pad and straight into the keepers gloves.
1.4 Dunning to Vibert, no run. Swing and a miss outside the off stump
1.5 Dunning to Vibert, no run. Tries to work the ball to leg but ball brushes thigh pad.
1.6 Dunning to Vibert, no run. Gets hold of this one but can only smash to mid off.

End of Over 2 (maiden) Walkovers: 5/1
M. Cox 3* (3b) Weir 1-0-5-1
C. Vibert 2* (7b) Dunning 1-1-0-0

Good over that from Dunning, you don't often see maidens in this form of cricket - a maiden bowled by a maiden, indeed! Weir to continue from the same end.

2.1 Weir to M. Cox, 3 runs. Lovely shot for 3 to the back wall, got in position early
2.2 Weir to Vibert, 3 runs. Front food forward and cuts towards point but the ball goes through the fielder for a comfortable 3 in the end. Good running.
2.3 Weir to M.Cox, 2 runs. Dabbed in front of cover this time and they run through
2.4 Weir to Vibert, no run. Looking for the cut and just misses out this time
2.5 Weir to Vibert, OUT. A slightly slower ball does for Vibert as he tries to cut once more. Pitched and hit top of off stump, decent ball but Walkovers in trouble.
C.Vibert b Weir 5 (10b 0x4 0x6)

This brings Daniel Cox to the crease, wearing a cap for concentration and he joins his brother at the crease. One ball left in the over

2.6 Weir to D.Cox, no run. Sensible shot just defending back to the bowler

End of Over 3 (8 runs) Walkovers: 13/2
M. Cox 8* (5b) Weir 2-0-13-2
D.Cox 0* (1b) Dunning 1-1-0-0

3.1 Dunning to M. Cox, no run. Attempted cut but doesn't connect
3.2 Dunning to M.Cox, 3 runs. Pushed off the back foot through the covers for 3. Nice.
3.3 Dunning to D. Cox, no run. On to the back foot early, pats this back to the bowler
3.4 Dunning to D.Cox, OUT. Fuller ball this time temps D.Cox to slog over the top for six but his attempt only finds the fielder at mid-on. Trouble here.
D. Cox c. Gilham b Dunning 0 (3b 0x4 0x6)

Walkovers in real trouble here and only 3.4 overs have been bowled. Paul Spencer walks out, will he help the team to a competitive total? The batsmen crossed.

3.5 Dunning to M.Cox, 3 runs. He looks in reall good nick here. A slightly shorter ball this time and Cox rocks back and plays a very fine cut for three.
3.6 Dunning to Spencer, no run. A ball very much down the leg side but umpire Vosser is unmoved. Generous.

End of Over 4 (6 runs) Walkovers: 19/3
M. Cox 14* (8b) Weir 2-0-13-2
Spencer 0* (1b) Dunning 2-1-6-1

4.1 Weir to M.Cox, no run. Attempting to run this down past point, misses.
4.2 Weir to M.Cox, 2 wides. Leg side delivery getting wider and past the keeper for 2
4.2 Weir to M.Cox, no run. Again leg side but hits the batsmans pads who may feel he missed out on a freebie there
4.3 Weir to M.Cox, FOUR. Doesn't miss out on this one as he hammers this straight down the ground for the first boundary of the evening.
4.4 Weir to M.Cox, no run. Great come-back from the bowler, Cox is beaten
4.5 Weir to M.Cox, OUT. Ball pitched fuller this time and Cox is quickly onto it but middles it chest height straight to mid-off. He will be dissapointed with that, he was looking really good out there.
M. Cox c Pitcher b Weir 18 (13b 1x4 0x6)

Well well well, Walkovers in real trouble now - if only someone could stick around for a bit. Hopefully that man has just walked out, no. 6 and captain Jake Patel. Still plenty of time left - 7.1 overs!
4.6 Weir to Patel, 1 wide. Very wide outside off gives Patel an early sighter
4.6 Weir to Patel, no run. Much better from the bowler who temps a nibble from Patel outside the off stump.

End of Over 5 (7 runs) Walkovers: 26/4
Spencer 0* (1b) Weir 3-0-20-3
Patel 0* (1b) Dunning 2-1-6-1

5.1 Dunning to Spencer, SIX. Spencer gets into position early and clubs this one straight and it beats a leaping mid on for a maximum. How Walkovers could do with some more of this to get the scoreboard really ticking.
5.2 Dunning to Spencer, no run. Beaten this time as he tries the repeat trick
5.3 Dunning to Spencer, no run. Swing and a miss, Spencer looking to clear the boundary once more but doesn't connect this time
5.4 Dunning to Spencer, SIX. Bosh. Right in Spencer's hitting zone and that was powerfully struck, even higher on the back wall this time.
5.5 Dunning to Spencer, 3 runs. There is more to his game than just power, a delightful flick off the legs brings Spencer 3 more.
5.6 Dunning to Patel, no run. Patted to mid on

End of Over 6 (15 runs) Walkovers: 41/4
Spencer 15* (6b) Weir 3-0-20-3
Patel 0* (2b) Dunning 3-1-21-1

Much better from Walkovers, now can they keep it going? Robin Pitcher to bowl

6.1 Pitcher to Spencer, 3 runs. Dropped. Spencer welcomes Pitcher to the game with a attempted slog out of the ground but finds some top edge. The ball heads towards the wall but the fielder can't gather and they run through for 3 runs. Let off.
6.2 Pictcher to Patel, 2 runs. Dabbed with soft hands to the offside, good running.
6.3 Pitcher to Spencer, no run. Smashed down the ground, stopped by the bowler
6.4 Pitcher to Spencer, 1 run. Again going arial the balls hits the roof, riccochets off some metalwork and falls just short of the fielder in the deep. Patel turns down a run, wise call in the circumstances.
6.5 Pitcher to Spencer, no run. Hit hard but straight to mid off
6.6 Pitcher to Spencer, 3 runs. Between the fielders on the off side.

End of Over 7 (9 runs) Walkovers: 50/4
Spencer 22* (11b) Pitcher 1-0-9-0
Patel 2* (3b) Dunning 3-1-21-1

7.1 Gilham to Spencer, 3 runs. New bowler Gilham is immediately punished for a ball wide of off stump. Spencer was quickly on to that and cut it behind point for 3 more.
7.2 Gilham to Patel, no run. Inside edge onto pad and the ball spins away but safely
7.3 Gilham to Patel, no run. Another inside edge but again this is safe
7.4 Gilham to Patel, no run. Beautiful ball that leaves Patel and beats him all ends up.
7.5 Gilham to Patel, no run. Play and miss outside the off stump
7.6 Gilham to Patel, no run. Head on Jake, you can't whack every ball! No foot movement, head opposite direction to bat angle resulting in a swing and a miss.

End of Over 8 (3 runs) Walkovers: 53/4
Spencer 25* (12b) Pitcher 1-0-9-0
Patel 2* (8b) Gilham 1-0-3-0

Good partnership developing between these two, perhaps Patel can be the anchor and Spencer the enforcer as they attempt to get close to 100

8.1 Pitcher to Spencer, OUT. Going for the big shot once more but fails to connect cleanly this time, a top edge being collected comfortably by the keeper after being in the air for a couple of seconds. Good knock that from Spencer but Walkovers are some way from something competitive here. Perhaps Patel can do something to dig them out of a hole here.
Spencer c Morris b Pitcher 25 (13b 0x4 2x6)

8.2 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Tries to dab this down but is beaten
8.3 Pitcher to Patel, 2 runs. Shorter ball and is worked to leg with a cross batted shot that also bounces. Difficult to describe but a shot seen during beach cricket at times. Still, an effective shot and brings Patel two more towards the total.
8.4 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Defended to the off side
8.5 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Should be game over. Patel calls Spencer through but changes his mind half way down the track. Luckily the fielding isn't clean and Patel makes it back just in time
8.6 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Patted to the off side

End of Over 9 (2 runs) Walkovers: 55/5
Patel 4* (13b) Pitcher 2-0-11-1
Gilham 1-0-3-0

9.1 Gilham to Patel, no run. Beaten b a good ball outside off
9.2 Gilham to Patel, no run. Defended to the offside
9.3 Gilham to Patel, 3 runs. Patel eases the pressure by dabbing this one just past the keeper for a welcome three runs, good shot.
9.4 Gilham to Patel, no run. Defended to point, no runs there
9.5 Gilham to Patel, no run. Perhaps it was a leave but it appeared too quick for Patel
9.6 Gilham to Patel, no run. Defended on the front foot back to the bowler

End of Over 10 (3 runs) Walkovers: 58/5
Patel 7* (19b) Pitcher 2-0-11-1
Gilham 2-0-6-0

Patel doing a good job here of trying to see out the overs, Walkovers need him to.

10.1 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Struck on the pads trying to work the ball to leg
10.2 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Hit hard but straight to mid on
10.3 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Defended back to the bowler off the back foot
10.4 Pitcher to Patel, 4 wides. Should be out. Wide ball down leg side, a suicidal run called for and Walkovers make it home by virtue of the keeper not walking into the stumps but throwing, and missing. Can Patel make them pay?
10.4 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Hit to the off side where Mavericks field
10.5 Pitcher to Patel, no run. Straight back to the bowler.

Deary me, that's a five ball over called by the umpire

End of Over 11 (4 runs) Walkovers: 62/5
Patel 7* (25b) Pitcher 3-0-15-1
Gilham 2-0-6-0

11.1 Gilham to Patel, no run. Too good for Patel, fishes for it outside off
11.2 Gilham to Patel, no run. Patel trying to heave this for six but no-where near
11.3 Gilham to Patel, 2 leg byes. The ball strikes Patel outside the line but they call each other through for what seems like the end as it is in the fielders hands. Not quite sharp enough or a direct hit and they scramble two more to the total. That should have been curtains for the B team.
11.4 Gilham to Patel, 1 run. OUT. It's all over now - even more crazy running after hesitation and the ball comes off the wall although they are undone by a good throw from the fielder and the bowler takes off the bails.
Patel run out 8 (29b 0x4 0x6)

All over for Walkovers and despite some promise it looks as though 65 won't be enough runs on the board to defend. Still, stranger things have happened and they can take heart from the fact they have a good looking bowling attack on paper at least. Join us again in 5 for the resumption of play where we'll see Vosser and Spencer opening up hoping to take quick wickets.

0.1 Vosser to Ricketts, no run. Great ball first up, making the batsman play
0.2 Vosser to Ricketts, 3 runs. On to the back foot early from a shorter length ball from Vosser and played for three wide of the keeper - looked a little edgy to me.
0.3 Vosser to Pitcher, no run. Looking for a run on the offside but well fielded
0.4 Vosser to Pitcher, 3 runs. Back of a length delivery punched through cover
0.5 Vosser to Ricketts, 1 wide. Wide down leg and Vibert does well to stop the extra
0.5 Vosser to Ricketts, OUT. Fuller ball on middle and leg lofted towards mid on where Dan Cox moves round and takes a catch that he makes look comfortable. That's a great breakthrough early on and just what they needed.
Ricketts c D.Cox b Vosser 3

0.6 Vosser to Gilham, no run. Defended to the leg side

End of Over 1 (7 runs) Mavericks: 7/1
Pitcher 3* (2b) Vosser 1-0-7-1
Gilham 0* (1b)

1.1 Spencer to Pitcher, no run. Different action to Vosser, loopier and no run
1.2 Spencer to Pitcher, 2 runs. Sneak through despite good fielding from Patel
1.3 Spencer to Gilham, no run. Making the batsman feel for the ball outside off
1.4 Spencer to Gilham, FOUR. Shorter in length and smashed down the ground.
1.5 Spencer to Gilham, 3 runs. Slower delivery but the batsman picks it and gets 3
1.6 Spencer to Pitcher, 1 run. OUT. Shorter in length again and the batsman smashes it towards the boundary. The ball cannons off the roof and Spencer positions himself well and gathers the catch at the second attempt.
Pitcher c & b Spencer 6 (5b 0x4 0x6)

End of Over 2 (10 runs) Mavericks: 17/2
Gilham 7* (4b) Vosser 1-0-7-1
Spencer 1-0-10-1

I tell you what, Walkovers are in here! Good spirit amongst the players and you can sense they are well up for this. Just need a few more tight overs and a couple more wickets..

2.1 Vosser to Morris, no run. Defended to leg
2.2 Vosser to Morris, no run. Ball on middle but hit straight to mid off
2.3 Vosser to Morris, no run. Great line this outside off stump and making the batsman work hard thinking about where to work the ball, defended.
2.4 Vosser to Morris, 3 runs. Good length again but erred in line and clipped to leg
2.5 Vosser to Morris, 1 run. Shorter this time and edged past the keeper who didn't seem to pick that one up. Clips the wall and one more to the total.
2.6 Vosser to Gilham, no run. Good end to a top over, batsman strikes to mid off

End of Over 3 (4 runs) Mavericks: 21/2
Gilham 7* (5b) Vosser 2-0-11-1
Morris 4* (5b) Spencer 1-0-10-1

3.1 Spencer to Morris, 1 wide. Slower delivery heads down leg, umpire signals wide
3.1 Spencer to Morris, no run. Much better ball on a good length, defended
3.2 Spencer to Morris, 3 runs. Quick drop and run from the batsman to the leg side putting pressure on the field and an overthrow from D. Cox means they pick up 3
3.3 Spencer to Gilham, 3 runs. Comfortable shot from a shorter ball for 3 more
3.4 Spencer to Morris, no run. Dropped onto the offside and good fielding from Vosser prevents Mavericks adding further to the score.
3.5 Spencer to Morris, no run. Appeal. Ball sliding down towards leg, batsman plays and there is a noise as Vibert gathers well behind the stumps. Muted appeal but the ball appeared to clip thigh pad rather than glove or bat.
3.6 Spencer to Morris, no run. Good ball to finish the over with, fuller and straighter

Walkovers are putting up a good fight here, some excellent bowling and fielding leaving Mavericks under a bit of pressure. Vosser to continue at Gilham.

End of Over 4 (7 runs) Mavericks: 28/2
Gilham 10* (6b) Vosser 2-0-11-1
Morris 7* (10b) Spencer 2-0-17-1

4.1 Vosser to Gilham, no run. Beaten. Great ball from Vosser leaves the batsman wafting outside off to a ball that seemed to move away off the seam
4.2 Vosser to Gilham, 3 runs. Tight run taken on the leg side but Spencer can't hit
4.3 Vosser to Morris, 1 wide. Down leg and Vibert does well to keep that to just 1
4.3 Vosser to Morris, no run. Back of length ball on middle stump, defended
4.4 Vosser to Morris, no run. See above, exactly the same - good bowling
4.5 Vosser to Morris, no run. Inside edge onto pad and loops up to the leg side but just short of Spencer at square leg
4.6 Vosser to Morris, no run. Great way to end his spell, good ball back of a length and the batsman can only defend back to the bowler

End of Over 5 (4 runs) Mavericks: 32/2 Gilham 13* (8b) Vosser 3-0-15-1 Morris 7* (14b) Spencer 2-0-17-1

Change of bowling here as Patel looks for more wickets, bringing himself on

5.1 Patel to Gilham, no run. Appeal. The ball pitches outside leg stump and looks to drift further down leg as the batsman tries to sweep but the ball hits the pads. Patel goes up but that is never going to be given, an awful shout!
5.2 Patel to Gilham, 3 runs. Dabbed behind point for three
5.3 Patel to Morris, no run. Defended back to bowler
5.4 Patel to Morris, 2 runs. Hit to Vosser at mid off, he chooses the wrong end to throw
5.5 Patel to Gilham, no run. Good ball, fuller and makes the batsman defend to off
5.6 Patel to Gilham, 2 runs. Run out chance here, they attempt a very quick run out to point where M.Cox picks up and again the wrong end is chosen. Unlucky this, but 2 more added to the total.

End of Over 6 (7 runs) Mavericks: 39/2
Gilham 18* (12b) Patel 1-0-7-0
Morris 9* (16b) Spencer 2-0-17-1

Daniel Cox now comes into the attack, looking for a breakthrough. This is a shocker though as he continues to where his cap indoors, slated by Paul Michel earlier.

6.1 D. Cox to Gilham, OUT. Half track ball first up and the batsman tries to work it to leg but only succeeds in getting a leading edge straight to Spencer at mid-wicket. Not the best delivery but Walkovers aren't complaining, they still have a shout here!
Gilham c Spencer b D. Cox 18 (13b 1x4 0x6)

6.2 D. Cox to Dunning, 1 wide. Wide, very wide to the new bat, left hander Dunning
6.2 D. Cox to Dunning, 3 runs. Cut easily from a short pitched delivery for three
6.3 D.Cox to Morris, no run. Better ball, fuller and on leg stump - patted to mid wicket
6.4 D.Cox to Morris, 3 runs. Shorter leg stump delivery eased through the leg side
6.5 D. Cox to Dunning, no run. Shorter ball again and smashed to leg with no reward
6.6 D.Cox to Dunning, no run. Best ball of the over, a better length on off stump but the batsman is in position early and confident defends back down the pitch

End of Over 7 (7 runs) Mavericks: 46/3
Morris 12* (18b) Patel 1-0-7-0
Dunning 3* (3b) D.Cox 1-0-7-1

7.1 Patel to Morris, 3 runs. Back of a length delivery pushed through the covers
7.2 Patel to Dunning, 3 runs. Around the wicket to the left hander the ball pitches short and the batsman swivels a pull for three to the leg side. Patel needs to pitch it up here.
7.3 Patel to Morris, no run. Much fuller this time but the batsman is in position early and smashes it down the ground for what seems a certain boundary. Dan Cox moves around well and pulls off an excellent save to stop four.
7.4 Patel to Morris, no run. Better ball from Patel, defended into the off side
7.5 Patel to Morris, 3 runs. Batsman uses his feet to loft this for 3 runs to leg
7.6 Patel to Dunning, 4 runs. Shorter ball patted for 3 and a quick run, the throw comes in from M. Cox but D. Cox backing it up lets it go through him for one more

End of Over 8 (13 runs) Mavericks: 59/3
Morris 18* (22b) Patel 2-0-20-0
Dunning 10* (5b) D.Cox 1-0-7-1

Walkovers on the brink here now, just seven required for Mavericks to claim victory despite a good fight from the B team. D. Cox to continue

8.1 D.Cox to Dunning, 3 runs. Short ball pulled round the corner for three runs
8.2 D.Cox to Morris, 2 runs. Good ball on middle and leg worked for a quick single to mid on which was comfortable in the end.
8.3 D.Cox to Dunning, OUT. Wide enough to be called outside off but the batsman reaches for it and strokes it straight into the hands of a delighted Spencer, what a game it's been for him. D. Cox claims his second wicket but it's surely too late?
Dunning c Spencer b D. Cox 13 (7b 0x4 0x6)

Just 2 runs to win it now, or 2 more wickets for Walkovers - game on

8.4 D. Cox to Weir, 1 wide. Just one to win it now after a wide down leg side
8.4 D. Cox to Weir, 1 wide. Wide again and surely that is the match? No it appears the scores are level (not in my book!) and we'll have another. Surely they can at least finish by hitting the winning runs? Perhaps that is what the umpire wanted, after all..
8.4 D. Cox to Weir, 1 wide. Ball sails even wider down the leg side to the dissapointment of everyone, including the umpire as he signals the death knell for Walkovers B. Mavericks win by 2 wickets.

A brave fielding display then from Walkovers who simply didn't have enough runs to play with after being bowled out for 65. Patel gets the team in a huddle and goes through the positives, such as the great team spirit and fielding performance. He explains that "it was a bad toss to lose with the ball seaming around all over the place, and unfortunately we were playing one of the strongest sides in the league this year. It's a learning curve for us and we will get better"

22.10pm Patel has named Paul Spencer as Man of the Match for his 25 runs, a wicket as well as three catches - well played that man.

22.15pm Time for me to sign off following a throughly enjoyable evening, join me next time on walkinfo, Walkovers only live online commentary site. Good night
