Walkovers Charity Cricket Challenge – in aid of CYSTIC FIBROSIS
(CF)
On Saturday 27th June, Jersey’s Walkovers Cricket Club will be
participating in a unique event.
The plan is to play four games of cricket in Twenty20 format, in
four different Channel Islands in just one day.
The team will start their quest as early as 7am in Alderney having
stayed overnight on the island. Once this fixture has taken place,
the team will then travel by air to Guernsey for their second match.
After their second match and in order to save valuable time, the
team will travel to Sark and Jersey on a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat)
for the remaining two matches. After the final match in Jersey at
Grainville Cricket Ground there will be a raffle and presentations
expected to start at about 9pm.
The idea is to raise both awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis,
something that our friend, and team mate Kevin English, suffers
from.
Kevin leads a fairly normal life, albeit with the help of the CF
trust who provide medication, support and apparatus allowing him to
be active.
CF is the UK’s most common, life threatening inherited disease and
claims three lives a week in the UK.
We want to raise the profile of CF both here in Jersey, and in the
UK – as many people do not know what it is, or the effect it has on
people’s lives.
Walkovers Cricket Club wanted to make this event unique and
worthwhile, fitting of the charity and people we want to help.
Contributions to charity are often made through various events such
as jumble and car boot sales, walks and other more sedate
activities.
Walkovers Cricket club wanted something different, something active
and something exciting – something that would stir people’s
imagination. Something that would stand out.
We feel we have come up with an event that will be remembered for
years to come and hopefully generate the interest and charity of the
general public.
Indeed we would love the support from both media and general public
– our perfect picture of the event would be locals and friends
taking their boats and planes out for the day and following the team
around the four islands.
We want it to become a real community event, and welcome any further
ideas to enhance the feel of it.
The make up of the day is as follows;
07.00am – Start fixture versus Alderney Cricket Club in Alderney
10.00am - Fly from Alderney to Guernsey on Blue Islands
10.30am - Start fixture versus Guernsey opposition TBA
13.15pm - Leave Guernsey on TT Divers RIB for Sark
14.00pm - Fixture versus Sark Cricket Club
16.30pm - Leave Sark on TT Divers RIB for Jersey
18.00pm - Start fixture versus Sporting Club Francais XI, Jersey
21.00pm - Presentations, thanks and Raffle.
We have also registered for a Guinness World Record attempt for the
challenge, and have made it through to the second stage of the
application process. It is by no means guaranteed, but exciting to
think this could be a first.
