History of Walkover Ladies Cricket Team
Our cricket team started out as the brainchild of one Eleanor Blazey (now Swanepoel) a formidable Australian player who had already proved she could hold her own against the male players in the Island. In our first season we spent a lot of time in the nets training, the majority of us coming from a hockey background. For the first three (I think, was poss only 2) seasons we were known as Nomads Ladies Cricket Club and though games were few and far between there were opportunities for friendly games and everyone was keen to progress.
When El migrated to South Africa we were left to march on, but new additions to the squad meant that we always had more than enough players. We were also involved in games against Lilies ladies this season and though we lost the first couple of games we improved as the season progressed and won the remaining fixtures against Lilies. Also in this season we forged our first links with Walkovers Cricket Club with Brad and Patts providing coaching and encouragement.
In the 2009/10 season we merged with Walkovers to become Walkers Ladies and a Tri-Series was established between Lilies and Walkovers. Despite the weather doing its best to stop us we emerged victorious from the series with fine performances all round.
In the 2010/11 season we progressed into the arena of the Indoor Cricket League and whilst not managing to secure a victory our gameplay improved dramatically as the season progressed and we look forward to competing again next winter. The start of the summer season was tinged with disappointment as the Tri-Series was not to be repeated as Lilies were unable to field a team to complete the fixtures. However there will be other games against different opposition and an opportunity for Walkovers Ladies to follow in the footsteps of Brad in representing the Island in a tournament in France over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
This is just a brief overview of our cricketing exploits, but far more importantly we enjoy a good range of social events and are always on the look out for new players.
