Under the Spotlight: Daniel Cox

This is the first in the series of a new feature to be written exclusively for the Walkovers CC official website where we ask members of the club to spill the beans. We shall be conducting interviews with members and each month hope to provide an interesting insight into their lives.

First up is Daniel Cox, the 22 year old IT worker born in the Island. He made is Walkovers debut back in 2004 against Sloggers;

Morning Dan, thank you for being our first member to let us know about your life inside and outside of Walkovers CC. First of all, why is it that you love the club?

Well firstly I would just like to say that I think you guys are the greatest. I love the club because of it’s friendly nature and the fact that win, lose or draw, we always have fun and improve as cricketers through the excellent training provided by the club.

Funny you should say that sentence “I think you guys are the greatest” as it was something I believe you said after the club’s tour to Brighton. Can you shed any light on that for me please?

Well the tour to Brighton was a good initiation process. It allowed me to get to know the lads more, particularly you. So much so that I got to know how you like to make up little stories… One morning of the tour near the end of the trip the lads were sat round the breakfast table, as I was one of the messiest the nights before I came down a little late to find everyone there, Pats decided it would be funny to tell the group that the night before I told him that “you guys are the greatest” and that “this is the best tour I have ever been on”. Of course this is lies but never the less quite funny.

Lies indeed! So was that the best tour you went on, as I believe you went to Cardiff as well?

I preferred Cardiff as we actually played cricket and did more things. Brighton was still good but was basically a messy long weekend as it rained lots so matches were cancelled.

So you preferred Cardiff despite you meeting a ‘special someone’ in Brighton, and all the trouble you had with your bag at the airport in the welsh capital?

Yeah for me, cricket comes first. Trouble with the bag was a minor hiccup but hey, it provided entertainment for the rest of you!

Good man, and yes it did provide entertainment for all of us! We watched Dan’s bag go round and round the carousel claiming it wasn’t his until about ten minutes later when he picked it up and decided it was his after all! There had been no other bag on the carousel for at least 5 minutes! So you have declined to comment on meeting a special someone – is there anyone who fits that bill in your life right now that you may wish to share with us? Not literally, obviously..

Well John, I’m quite a private person so would not wish to disclose much but all I can say is, I’m open to offers.

Open to offers indeed! So what do you feel you have to offer a woman? What would you say your main attributes and interests outside cricket and Walkovers CC are?

Is this turning into a dating agency questionnaire or what!? Well, as you know from the answer to the previous question, I can provide entertainment through my stupidity so surely that’s a winner!? Also John, as you know, I’m one to “Woo” the ladies with dinner dates involving Pizza. Outside of cricket and Walkovers I like to play a lot of football. Currently on an FA Level 1 coaching course and helping out with Grouville Under 12s. Once qualified I will work for ID Elite.

So a sporting hero you must be – congratulations with that. Do you play any other sports at all or been involved in any sporting events throughout the island?

I play badminton with work – speaking of which I have a doubles game at 1. Wish me luck! Its more of a fun thing but I am good at it. Shame the walkovers badminton league never really got going as I fancied my chances in that!

Good luck! You will have to speak to Steven Mitchell about that, it is a shame.. Thank you for your time in this interview, can I conclude it by asking where do you hope to be in 5 years time, and where do you see Walkovers CC in the same time-frame – what is the future for both of you?

Its been a pleasure Pats. I’m not one to look into the future, normally take things as they come. All I know is, as long as I’m still playing for Walkovers CC and having banter with you lot then I’ll be a happy man. In 5 years I can see Walkovers dominating jersey cricket with the A team in Division one and the Rebels either pushing for promotion from Division 2 or also joining the A team in Division 1. Also we will probably have a very successful weekend league team by then.

Thank you again Dan, some insightful answers there! Please join us next week where we shall get inside another Walkovers mind! Until then goodbye...
